Movie Review: The Irishman (2019)

Image
The Irishman (also titled onscreen as I Heard You Paint Houses ) is a 2019 American epic crime film directed and produced by Martin Scorsese and written by Steven Zaillian, based on the 2004 book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt. It stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci with supporting roles played by Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale, Anna Paquin, Stephen Graham, Stephanie Kurtzuba, Jesse Plemons, and Harvey Keitel. The film follows a mob hitman who recalls his involvement with American union leader Jimmy Hoffa.      To the shock of almost nobody, it just so happens that the gangster movie directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci is good. Actually, more than good. This movie is incredible and surpassed my already high expectations.      Regarding our three main leads, this is some of the best work they've ever done. De Niro's restrained turn as a WWII Vet into a Mafia hitman serves as a great contrast to the m

Movie Review: The Fanatic (2019)

Is John Travolta okay? I know he's been a bit on the big brain with all of that Scientology nonsense, but now I'm worried in regards to both his acting career and personal well-being. Was this some cry of help? What happened with this movie? Why?      The Fanatic is a 2019 American psychological thriller directed and co-written by Fred Durst (Yes frontman of the rap-rock band Limp Bizkit) and stars John Travolta. A rabid film fan stalks his favorite action hero and destroys the star's life.       If the initial statement indicates anything, this movie can be best summarized as bizarre. Travolta's appearance and portrayal of an autistic character are bound to get many raised eyebrows for all of the right reasons. For what has been marketed as a thriller, this is one of the funniest films I've seen in a long time. In the same realm of other movies like The Room and Birdemic , this movie is so bad to the point of being comedic.      Before I g

Movie Reivew: Shin Godzilla (2016)

Ever wondered what happens when you mix Godzilla and the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion into a blender? Well, you get this movie.      Shin Godzilla is a Japanese Kaiju film directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi. Starring Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi, and Satomi Ishihara, politicians struggle with bureaucrat red tape to deal with the sudden appearance of a giant monster that evolves whenever it is attacked.        As an installment in a series known for mainly being B-movies, Shin Godzilla harkens back to the original 1954 film regarding its tone and themes. This is a grounded, dark interpretation of the license that looks at the titular character and its upbringing through a much more tragic lens. This time, this story is mixed in with a more modern flavor and a boatload of political commentary.      While Shin Godzilla callbacks to the original film's themes on nuclear war in crucial events, the overall picture is more inspired by the Fukushi
